The new Nikon P7000: DSLR qualities in disguise

Nikon introduces the compact 10.1-megapixel Coolpix P7000, featuring a large 1/1.7" CCD sensor coupled with a 7.1x Wide Angle Optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED lens. The camera also features 5-Way VR Image Stabilization System, which utilizes a variety of tactics including optical lens shift to minimize the effect of camera shake. On the back of the camera you'll find a spacious 3.0-inch 921,000-dot display and an optical viewfinder with diopter adjustment dial. The Coolpix P7000 will be available later this month for $499.95...


New Nikon Coolpix Touch S80 and Zoom S8100

Nikon introduces the Coolpix S80, a stylish digital camera equipped with a 14.1 Mp CCD sensor, a 5x Wide-Angle optical zoom lens and a bright 3.5-inch high resolution (819,000-dot) organic LED (OLED) touch screen. The Coolpix S80 will be available in the fall for $329.95 in the colors red, black, blue, pink, gold and silver/brown. Nikon also introduces the high speed (10 fps) Coolpix S8100 equipped with a 12.1 Mp backside illumination CMOS sensor and a 10x optical zoom lens. The S8100 will be available later this month for $299.95...


Carl Zeiss UV and POL filters and camera straps

Zeiss offers UV and POL filters that are optically & mechanically tailored to the Zeiss lenses and protected against light reflections with the Zeiss T* multi-coating. In addition to the filter function, the front lens element of the lenses provides extra protection against contamination and scratches. With the standard diameters of 58, 67, 72 and 82 mm, they also fit lenses of other manufacturers. Because good optics can be somewhat heavy at times, Carl Zeiss now kindly offers a special camera strap with air cell padding for SLR cameras...


Samsung announces two BSI CMOS image sensors

Samsung announces two new 1.4 micron CMOS imagers, adopting back side illuminated (BSI) pixel technology, each imager is optimized for smartphones resp. digital still and video cameras. In contrast to conventional front side illumination, backside illumination collects photons from the backside of the pixel and offers better performance in low light scenarios. Samsung had previously equipped their TL350 / WB2000 digital cameras and their recently announced S-Series camcorders with such BSI image sensors...


Sanyo releases HD Xacti PD1 in pocket format

Sanyo Europe releases the new Xacti PD1 Full HD, 1920 x 1080 30p, Dual Camera, released last month as Xacti PD2 for the US market. The PD1 offers Full HD video recording, 10 megapixel photo shooting, and 3x optical zoom in a stylish form factor that is about the size of a deck of cards. The pocket-sized PD1 features Stereo Sound Recording and a Mini-HDMI port. The camera will be available in September with an MSRP of 169 Euros, a reasonable price though the US gets a better deal as the camera sells there for 169 dollars...


Carl Zeiss presents a new moderate wide-angle lens

Zeiss introduces a new standard lens, the Distagon T* 1,4/35. Due to the special bokeh effects in both the foreground and the background areas, the Distagon T*1,4/35 opens up new creative possibilities, giving you more options to 'play' with focus with its large focus ring. The Distagon T*1,4/35's extremely long-lasting and robust all-metal precision mechanics, for which Carl Zeiss is known, make this lens perfect for use on-the-go and for photo reports. The Distagon T* 1,4/35 will be available in first quarter for €1385.71...


Toshiba/Panasonic introduce fastest SDHC-cards

Toshiba and Panasonic have both announced the new SDHC UHS-I memory cards, to date the world's first memory cards compliant with SD 3.0, with a maximum read speed of 95MB per second, and a write speed of 80MB per second. The new memory cards will be available in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB versions and will be featured at the IFA and PHOTOKINA show. Panasonic is to introduce an 8GB and 16GB version of these fast UHS-I Memory Cards that are planned to be available from November...


Samsung further expands the ES Series with ES30

Samsung is further expanding its ES Series, first introduced at the 2009 CES, with another run-of-the-mill point-and-shooter, the new model ES30. This 12.2 Mp digital camera offers 5x optical zoom (27~135 mm), regular AVI (MJPEG) video recording and a 3-inch (7.6 cm) LCD monitor. As such, the new camera perfectly fills the gap in Samsung's already impressive ES (Essential) camera line-up: the model ES10, ES15, ES17, ES20, ES25, ES27, ES30, ES37, ES50, ES55, ES60, ES65, ES67, ES70, ES71, ES73 and the ES75...


SD Association reveals new memory card design

The SD Association announces that it has defined a new, dual-row pin card design (conceptual view shown here). New high speed interface signals will be assigned on the second row of pins of select SDXC and SDHC memory cards offering speeds of up to 300 MB per second for SDXC and SDHC devices and memory cards. It is fully backwards compatible, allowing equipped devices full use of any SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards (not vice versa). This new design will be part of the SD 4.0 specification, expected in early 2011...


Philips shows new PicoPix pocket projector series

Philips introduces a new line of PicoPix pocket projectors, all capable of projecting an image of 20 to 30 lumens, with a resolution of 800 x 600 and a contrast of 400:1. The miniature projectors are completely portable and are equipped with an integrated two-and-a-half-hour battery on the 1230 & 1430. The projectors will be available in October; the PicoPix 1020 for €199 (PC; USB powered), the 1230 for €269 (battery powered, stereo speakers) and the 1430 for €299 (integrated MP4 player, battery powered, stereo speakers, SD card slot)...


New 10-inch Sony Photo Frames show HD Video

Sony introduces ten new digital photo frames from 7 up to 10.2-inch. Sony also debuts first ever photo frames with AVCHD video playback. The latest S-Frame range of Sony photo frames brings your precious memories to life like never before as you can now view your favorite moments with AVCHD video playback with stereo sound on range-topping models. The top models XR100 and VR100 will be available in November for about $250 and $200 respectively. The other models will be available in prices ranging from $70 up to $150...


Sony launches two new Touchy Bloggie cameras

Sony introduces the next generation Bloggie cameras, the all-new HD snap models offering new looks with a slim, rounded body and finely brushed aluminum finish. The new cameras shoot Full HD 1920x1080 video and in addition they shoot 12.8 megapixel still image, all to be viewed on the large 3-inch (7.6cm ) touch-screen. The built-in USB and Bloggie software should provide for easy upload. Available in silver or black, the MHS-TS20 and MHS-TS10 will be available in October for about $200 and $180 respectively...


Olympus E-P2 black kit and two micro 4/3 lenses

Olympus pimps the PEN E-P2 by complementing its retro black metal body with a black M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm lens and a black FL-14 flash in a limited availability kit. The kit including USB Cable, Video Cable, Li-Ion Battery Pack, Li-Ion Battery Charger and Shoulder Strap will be available beginning in October for $999.99. At the same time Olympus announces two new lenses to its Micro Four Thirds lens family: the MM.Zuiko Digital ED 75-300 MM F4.8-6.7 and the 40-150MM F4.0-5.6. Pandigital Photo Mail Digital Photo Frame in Europe

Canon develops 205x205mm CMOS image sensor

Canon has developed the world's largest CMOS image sensor, with a chip size measuring 202 x 205 mm. The newly developed CMOS sensor is among the largest chips that can be produced from a 12-inch (300 mm) wafer, and it is approx. 40x the size of Canon's largest commercial CMOS sensor. Because its size, the new sensor allows more light to be gathered, enabling shooting in low-light environments. Potential applications for the new high-sensitivity sensor include the video recording of stars in the night sky and nocturnal animal behavior...

JVC introduces two new PICSIO pocket cameras

JVC introduces two new PICSIO pocket cameras, the GC-WP10 and GC-FM2. Both feature an image sensor that captures stills at up to five-megapixel resolution and record 1920 x 1080p, 30 fps Full HD video to be viewed at its 3-inch touchscreen. The FM2 includes a slide-out USB connector, so no connecting cable is needed. The WP10 is waterproof to a depth of 10 feet / 3 meters and comes with a MP3 audio recorder. The FM2 will be available in early September for $179.95, the WP10 in late September for $199.95...


Canon to exhibit new 500mm and 600mm lenses

Canon is developing two new telephoto lenses for use with its EOS digital SLR cameras, the EF500mm f/4L IS II USM and EF600mm f/4L IS II USM. These tough lenses are the successors to the EF500mm f/4L IS USM (introduced in July 1999) and EF600mm f/4L IS USM (introduced in September 1999. The new lenses target improved dust-proof and moisture-proof performance in the face of harsh shooting conditions to satisfy the demands of sports, news and nature photographers. Kodak introduces new EasyShare C195 and C143

Kodak expands its C-Series Point-and-Shoot digital camera line with two new entry level models.
